What you are replacing
Before comparing, write down which part of Descript you actually use. Its pricing page on October 23, 2026 sold four self-serve plans priced per person: Free at $0 with 60 media minutes a month and 100 one-time AI credits; Hobbyist at $24 a month, or $16 billed annually, with 10 media hours, 400 AI credits a month and watermark-free 1080p export; Creator at $35, or $24 annually, with 30 media hours, 800 AI credits and 4K export; and Business at $65, or $50 annually, with 40 media hours and 1,500 AI credits. Enterprise is priced by sales.
Those plans bundle several jobs: text-based editing (“edit video by editing a doc”), remote recording, AI tools such as Studio Sound, Remove Filler Words and Create Clips, and AI Speech with voice clones. Few alternatives do all of them. Most people searching for a Descript alternative need one or two of these jobs done cheaper or better, so the list below says which job each tool replaces. If you are choosing between the two best-known podcast editors, read Descript vs Riverside for a plan-by-plan comparison.

“Not listed” means we could not see it on the public pricing page, not that it does not exist. Yearly per-month figures are the vendors’ own; Camtasia’s $179.88 a year works out to about $14.99 a month (our arithmetic).
Riverside
Riverside is the closest Descript alternative for podcasters, because it does the recording as well as the editing. Pro was $35 a month billed monthly and includes up to 4K video, 48kHz audio, no watermark, unlimited text-based editing, unlimited transcriptions, an AI editing and repurposing agent, Magic Clips and show notes, podcast hosting and 15 hours of separate track downloads. Grow was $45 a month and adds social scheduling, a newsletter, live streaming to multiple destinations and 2 studios; Webinar was $99 a month, or $79 billed yearly, and hosts webinars with up to 100 registrants.
The yearly prices were not stable. In two of three loads of the pricing page on October 23, 2026, Pro showed $29 a month billed yearly and Grow $36; in the other, Pro showed $24 and Grow $34. Treat the lower figure as a possible offer and check at checkout. Each plan starts with a 14-day free trial; we did not see a Free plan card. Our Riverside pricing page has the full plan table.
Camtasia
Camtasia, from TechSmith, is the Descript alternative for screen recordings, tutorials and training. Its pricing is yearly. Starter at $39 a year is mainly screen capture: it includes Snagit and a watermarked Camtasia Editor. Essentials at $179.88 a year is the plan that matches Descript: it lists text-based video editing, automatic filler word removal, speech-to-text transcription, unlimited caption generation, editable multitrack recording, quizzes and SCORM export, and includes Camtasia Audiate. Create at $249 a year adds AI script writing and voiceover generation with 200+ voices, and Pro at $599 a year adds avatars, translation, audio dubbing and premium stock assets.
All plans include a 14-day money-back guarantee, and individual plans are non-transferable. We could not see a free plan on the store page.
Kapwing
Kapwing is a browser editor with a free plan and a transcript tool. Free gives 10 credits, unlimited exports with a watermark, videos up to 4 minutes, 720p and 5 GB of storage. Pro was $24 a month billed monthly or $16 billed annually, with 1,000 credits a month, no watermark, 4K export, projects up to 2 hours, up to 1,000 minutes of auto-subtitling and 50 minutes of dubbing a month. Business was $64 a month or $50 billed annually, with 4,000 credits, custom voice clones and lip sync. The plan cards did not say whether the price is per seat.
Kapwing’s Trim with Transcript tool edits a video by editing text, and Smart Cut removes silences automatically, which together cover Descript’s core editing job for short and mid-length videos.
VEED
VEED is a browser editor focused on subtitles, translation and AI video. Its pricing page showed two different versions to us on October 23, 2026. One listed Creator at $12, Pro at $22 and Studio at $39 per user a month billed annually, with 6,000, 30,000 and 180,000 credits. Two later loads listed Creator at $120 and Pro at $228 per user a year, with 6,000 and 18,000 credits, and 4K export on Pro. We could not read a monthly price in either version. If you choose VEED, compare the yearly total at checkout, not the headline number.
Podcastle
Podcastle began as a podcast recorder and now sells itself as an AI creative suite with chat-based video editing and access to video and image models. Essentials was $19.99 a month, or $11.99 a month billed yearly, with 450 credits, 4 hours of audio and video recording, 2 hours of text-to-speech and AI audio enhancement (Magic Dust, noise reduction and silence removal). Pro was $39.99, or $23.99 yearly, with 1,200 credits and 20 hours of recording. Teams was $84.99 per creator a month, or $49.99 yearly. A Free plan is listed at $0.00. Pick it if you want recording and audio clean-up in the same place as AI generation; we did not see text-based editing on the plan cards.
Opus Clip
If the Descript feature you use most is Create Clips, a dedicated clipper is cheaper. Opus Clip Free gives 60 credits a month. Starter is $15 a month, monthly billing only, with 150 credits, AI clipping with a Virality Score, animated captions, filler and silence removal and watermark removal. Pro is $29 a month, or $14.50 a month billed annually ($174 a year), with 300 credits, 2 seats and export to Adobe Premiere Pro and DaVinci Resolve. See Opus Clip pricing and the best AI clip makers for other clippers.
CapCut
CapCut suits editors who want manual control over cuts and captions rather than a transcript workflow. Free includes templates and basic editing tools. Pro was shown at USD 19.99 a month with 1,200 AI credits, Ultra at USD 79 a month and Teams at USD 12.49 a month per seat. CapCut says the displayed pricing is for reference only and the final price appears after sign-in, so it can vary by account and region; our CapCut Pro price page explains the regional differences.
How to choose a Descript alternative
- Name the job. Recording, transcript editing, AI voice, clips or captions. Pick the tool that is strongest at that job, not the one with the longest feature list.
- Check the limit that bites. Descript meters media hours and AI credits; Kapwing, VEED, Podcastle and Opus Clip meter credits; Riverside meters separate track downloads; Camtasia is a flat yearly licence.
- Compare the same billing period. Several yearly prices here were shown per month. Multiply by 12 and compare the total you will pay up front.
- Test on one real recording. Run the same 20-minute file through Descript and your shortlist, and compare transcript accuracy and the time it takes to get a clean export.
How we checked these tools
On October 23, 2026 we loaded each vendor’s public pricing page in a browser, read both monthly and yearly tabs where the page offered them, and reloaded Riverside and VEED when their prices did not match earlier reads. We used only what each page showed; where a page did not show something, such as a free plan or a monthly price, we say so instead of guessing. We have not run these tools through our test protocol, so there is no ranking or score.
