For the full plan details, see our Descript pricing and Riverside pricing pages. One caution on Riverside: the FAQ on its pricing page quoted older yearly figures (Pro “from $29 to $24/month”, Grow “from $39 to $34”) that do not match the plan cards. We use the card prices, which repeated the yearly totals shown above.
What a year costs
Annual billing is the fair way to compare Descript vs Riverside, because both discount it. Our arithmetic from the listed prices, before tax:
- One person, entry plan: Descript Hobbyist $192 a year; Riverside Pro $348 a year.
- One person who needs 4K export in Descript: Descript Creator $288 a year; Riverside Pro already records and exports up to 4K at $348.
- Two editors: Descript Creator $576 a year (2 seats × $24 × 12). Riverside Pro includes one editor; a second is a paid add-on at a price the pricing page did not show (unverified).
- Record in Riverside, edit in Descript: Riverside Pro plus Descript Hobbyist, both yearly, is $540 a year.
If you only need short clips from recordings you already have, neither may be the cheapest route; compare the AI clipping cost per minute of dedicated clippers first.
Recording compared
Recording is where Riverside is strongest. Every paid Riverside plan lists unlimited recording hours, local recording with progressive uploads and automatic cloud backups, video up to 4K on desktop and 1080p in the mobile apps, 44.1 and 48 kHz audio, and up to 10 people in one session. The limit is on downloads: separate audio and video tracks for each participant can be downloaded for 15 hours a month on Pro, 20 on Grow and 25 on Webinar, and without a cap on Business. Past the cap you keep your content but cannot download new separate tracks until the next billing cycle.
Descript records remote sessions in Rooms. Its plan comparison lists 2 hours of recording on Free and 5, 15 and 25 recording hours a month on Hobbyist, Creator and Business, counted per drive, with up to 10 participants in a room, backup cloud recordings and screen recording of up to 2 screens. A Rooms recording is imported and transcribed automatically without using your transcription minutes, according to the same page.
| Limit | Descript | Riverside |
|---|---|---|
| Recording hours | 5 / 15 / 25 a month (Hobbyist / Creator / Business) | Unlimited |
| Separate-track downloads | Not listed as a separate limit | 15 / 20 / 25 hours a month (Pro / Grow / Webinar) |
| People in a session | 10 | 10 |
| Export resolution | 1080p on Hobbyist, 4K on Creator and Business | Up to 4K |
Editing, transcription and AI
Editing is where Descript is strongest. You edit audio and video by editing the transcript, and every paid plan includes Underlord (Descript’s AI co-editor), Studio Sound, Remove Filler Words, Create Clips and AI Speech with voice clones. Two numbers limit each Descript plan: media hours (10, 30 or 40 a month per editor on Hobbyist, Creator and Business) and AI credits (400, 800 or 1,500 a month). Transcription covers 25 languages, and Business adds translation and dubbing in 30+ languages and Brand Studio.
Riverside’s plans list unlimited text-based editing and unlimited transcription hours in 100+ languages, Magic Clips, Magic Audio, show notes, AI B-roll, eye contact correction and filler-word and silence removal. Some features use AI credits: AI translation, AI B-roll and animated clips. Pro starts with 2,000 credits and Business with 12,000; Magic Clips, Magic Audio and the AI Co-Creator do not use credits.
In short, Riverside’s transcription is not capped by hours on the plans we read, while Descript’s media hours cap how much you can bring in each month. Descript, in turn, lists more editing and voice tools on its pricing page.
Hosting, streaming and webinars
Riverside goes past editing into publishing. Pro includes podcast hosting and analytics for one show and publishing to YouTube, Spotify, Apple, Instagram, LinkedIn and more. Grow adds a second show, full HD 1080p live streaming with multistreaming to unlimited destinations and custom RTMP, social scheduling, a newsletter, a creator website and the Riverside MCP. Webinar adds webinars with up to 100 registrants, registration forms, Q&A, polls and a HubSpot integration.
The Descript pricing page we read lists no podcast hosting, live streaming or webinar hosting. It does offer shareable web pages with an embeddable player for exported video, and Descript advertises an API and MCP server for editing through code. If you need a show’s feed, a live stream or a webinar, Descript vs Riverside is not a close call: that is Riverside’s side of the table.
Free plans and trials
Descript has a Free plan: 1 media hour a month, 100 AI credits once, 720p export, 5 GB of storage, 2 hours of recording and limited access to the AI tools. Watermark-free export starts on Hobbyist. Riverside offers a 14-day free trial on Pro, Grow and Webinar. Its pricing page also rendered a Free card (2 hours of one-off multi-track recording, 720p video and a Riverside watermark) next to a notice that we were seeing a staging copy of the page, so we cannot confirm a free Riverside plan. For other free tiers, see AI video free plans compared.
Descript or Riverside: which to choose
- You record interviews with remote guests every week: Riverside Pro. Unlimited recording and separate tracks per guest matter more than editing extras.
- You record alone or already have files, and spend most time editing: Descript Hobbyist, or Creator if you need 4K or more than 10 media hours a month.
- You want to host the podcast and stream live from the same tool: Riverside Grow.
- You run lead-generation webinars: Riverside Webinar.
- A small team translates and dubs video: Descript Business.
- You want the best of both: record in Riverside and edit in Descript, at about $540 a year on the two entry plans billed yearly.
How we built this comparison
We read the Descript pricing page and the Riverside pricing page on October 22, 2026, including the monthly and yearly tabs and each plan comparison table, and saved copies. A plain download of Riverside’s page returned a staging copy with different plan cards, so we read the page in a browser; the rendered cards matched our earlier Riverside pricing check the same day. Yearly totals marked as our arithmetic are calculated from the listed monthly prices. We have not tested either product, and features marked unverified were not stated on the pricing pages. Its paid plans list unlimited recording hours, up to 4K video on desktop, 48 kHz audio and up to 10 people in a session, with 15 to 25 hours of separate-track downloads a month. Descript also records remote sessions (Rooms), with 5, 15 or 25 recording hours a month on its paid plans and 10 participants a room.
Is Descript or Riverside better for editing?
Descript is built around editing: you edit audio and video by editing the transcript, with Underlord, Studio Sound, filler-word removal and AI Speech. Does Riverside have a free plan like Descript?

Riverside’s paid plans offer a 14-day free trial; its pricing page also rendered a Free card (2 hours of multi-track recording, 720p, watermark) next to a notice that the page was a staging copy, so we treat the Riverside free plan as unverified.
