Esports highlight clippers: which AI tools catch the play

In a competitive match the moment worth posting is a play: an ace, a clutch, a goal. Speech-based AI clippers built for podcasts often miss it. This guide compares eight tools that say they find esports and gameplay highlights, grouped by the job they do and by how each one knows a play just happened.

Documentation check, not a scored test. Features and prices come from each vendor’s public pages, read on October 22, 2026 (Eklipse and Opus Clip on October 18, 2026). We have not yet run these tools on our own matches, so no tool gets a score and no accuracy figure here is ours.

Short answer

  • Kennel if you play Counter-Strike 2, League of Legends, Dota 2 or Rocket League on Windows and want clips cut from game data. It is an early alpha with no price shown.
  • Insights Capture if you also want to review matches with a team or coach. It is free, Windows only, and pairs auto-clipping with a VOD review tool.
  • Medal if you want the simplest free option across many games, with instant share links and mobile apps.
  • Outplayed or SteelSeries Moments if you want a free background recorder that marks key events for editing after the match.
  • Sizzle.gg, Eklipse or Opus Clip if your footage is already recorded: a stream, a VOD or a match file you are allowed to use.

Two jobs: clip while you play, or clip a VOD

An esports highlight clipper is one of two kinds of software, and picking the wrong kind is the most common mistake.

On-PC esports highlight clippers run in the background on your gaming PC, notice when a play happens and keep a clip of it: Kennel, Insights Capture, Medal, Outplayed and SteelSeries Moments. Nothing needs uploading.

VOD esports highlight clippers work afterwards on a stream or a recording you are allowed to use: Sizzle.gg, Eklipse and Opus Clip. They suit streamers and editors. Our AI stream clipper guide covers the streaming side in more depth.

The fourth column matters most. An esports highlight clipper that reads game data or the HUD knows a kill happened; one that listens to audio or reads chat is inferring it.

How each tool knows a play happened

An esports highlight clipper can decide a moment is worth keeping in four ways, and the tools above mix them.

  1. Official game data. Kennel names Valve’s Game State Integration (Counter-Strike 2, Dota 2), Riot’s Live Client Data API (League of Legends) and Rocket League’s Stats API. The game itself reports the kill.
  2. Reading the screen. Kill feeds, banners and pop-ups are visible on screen. Kennel says it reads the HUD this way in 14 languages for games without a data feed.
  3. Sound and chat. Eklipse describes combining gameplay patterns with audio spikes and chat activity, and Kennel clips firefights by sound in games it does not support. They can also fire on a loud joke.
  4. A general video model. Opus Clip’s ClipAnything is described as using visual, audio and sentiment cues and accepts prompts such as “find the clutch rounds”. It is not game-specific.

Insights Capture, Medal, Outplayed and SteelSeries Moments describe automatic event detection in supported games but do not say on the pages we read which of these methods they use. We do not guess.

Clippers that run while you play

Kennel

Kennel is a Windows 10/11 app in alpha that records your game, clips kills, aces and clutches by itself, plays instant replays between rounds and runs stream overlays, with or without OBS. The site lists 22 games and 14 languages and marks most games as “Calibrating” rather than “Working”; it says Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 and Warzone support comes after Modern Warfare 4 launches on October 23. On October 22, 2026 the download button still said “soon”, with the first alpha build going to the Kennel.gg Discord first. No price was shown.

Insights Capture

Insights Capture is a free Windows recorder that records every match automatically and tracks kills, deaths and key plays. Its FAQ lists automatic event detection in League of Legends, VALORANT, CS2 and more. Its VOD Review Tool lets teams timestamp events and review plays with a coach. Premium options and team bundles are listed on its pricing page.

Medal

Medal runs in the background on Windows 10 or later and saves what just happened when you press a key, with an instant share link. Its FAQ says it is completely free on PC and mobile with optional premium features, and that it supports event detection in Fortnite, Valorant, League of Legends, Apex Legends, Counter-Strike and more.

Outplayed

Outplayed is an Overwolf app that automatically captures your best moments while you play and shows them on a match timeline. Its page says it supports over 5,000 games, is free with ads, and offers a Premium subscription that removes ads.

SteelSeries Moments

SteelSeries Moments is a free Windows recorder. You can clip with a hotkey, or let Moments AI auto-clip specific games, which saves highlights as event markers on your timeline for editing after the match. On October 22, 2026 the page announced Moments AI support for Street Fighter 6 and Call of Duty: Black Ops 7.

Clippers that work on a recording

Sizzle.gg

Sizzle.gg links to your Twitch and YouTube accounts to fetch streams automatically, or takes uploaded gameplay videos, and builds clips and compilations with filters such as kills, knockdowns, headshots and victories. Its homepage describes the service as free; we did not find a pricing page.

Eklipse

Eklipse connects to Twitch, YouTube Live and Kick channels and says it combines gameplay patterns such as kills and wins, audio spikes and chat activity into a score for each moment. The free plan includes 3 clips per stream; we could not read its paid prices on October 18, 2026.

Opus Clip

Opus Clip is a general clipper, not an esports tool, but OpusClip recommends its ClipAnything model for footage with little talking and lets you describe the moment you want. Pro was $29 a month for 300 source minutes on October 18, 2026, so trim the VOD first. See Opus Clip pricing for the plans.

How to test an esports highlight clipper

Take one match you own, list every play you would clip by hand, then run one on-PC and one VOD esports highlight clipper on it. Count the plays each caught, the clips you would not post, and whether the kill feed stays readable in the vertical crop. Our testing protocol lists every field we record.

How we built this page

We kept tools that describe automatic highlight detection for competitive games. Every feature and price comes from the vendor’s own public page, read on October 22, 2026, except Eklipse and Opus Clip, read on October 18, 2026. Where a page did not state something, such as a premium price, we say so rather than guess. No vendor paid for placement and there are no affiliate links.

Frequently asked questions

What is an esports highlight clipper?

It is a tool that finds the plays worth keeping in competitive gameplay, such as kills, aces, clutches and goals, and saves them as clips without you scrubbing through the match. Some run on your PC while you play; others work on a stream or VOD after the match.

Which esports highlight clipper reads game data instead of guessing?

Kennel says it uses Valve’s Game State Integration for Counter-Strike 2 and Dota 2, Riot’s Live Client Data API for League of Legends and Rocket League’s Stats API, and reads the on-screen HUD in other games. Insights Capture, Medal and SteelSeries Moments describe automatic event detection in supported games but do not say how it works.

Is there a free esports highlight clipper?

Yes. On October 22, 2026 Insights Capture, Medal, Outplayed and SteelSeries Moments all described themselves as free to download, with paid or premium options for extra features, and Sizzle.gg described its highlights as free. Kennel showed no price and its download button said “soon”.

Have you tested these esports clippers?

Not yet. Everything on this page comes from each vendor’s own public pages. We have not run any of these tools on our own matches, so there are no scores or accuracy figures here.
